This time all the groups had a global theme of happiness and each team focused on three subtopics: Group 1 explained Self Care, Group 2 Pay It Forward, and Group 3 Good Eating. Following the global theme of happiness, each team made their investigation oriented to their subtopic to explain and give certain guidelines, examples, suggestions, advantages, and disadvantages of the best way to achieve happiness through taking care of one's body, mind, and relationships with others.
Group One’s theme was “Self-care” and they gave an overview of how to maintain one’s health is not only a physical process but also a mental and social one. The importance of exercising, having a clean diet, staying hydrated, having enough sleep, and having a positive mindset when taking care of one’s well-being. Along with this, our classmates gave us tips and guidance on how to improve our sleep habits, find more peace develop a positive mindset, and emphasized how big the influence of our families, friends, or social groups when it comes to health care. Group number one also represented self-love as the result of successfully taking care of our well-being and working with our relationships with ourselves. I liked how group one was very clear and gave multiple examples and guidance on how to take care of our well-being and the consequences each small change can have.
Group Two’s theme was “Pay it Forward” which was explained and illustrated through the movie of the same name. In this presentation, the importance of random acts of kindness and selfless actions, how these actions not only impact and benefit others but also oneself, and how a single kindness can create a chain of actions that can affect multiple people and make the world a better place. I liked this group took a different approach and made a direct connection between the chapters of the book assigned to them and the different scenes in the movie. While the rest of the teams focused on how to convey and illustrate their subtopic only and give a separate summary of the main topics of their chapters, group 2 took a different alternative and carried on a parallel of both the lessons and descriptions of the movie and how it is related to communications and their chapters.
Group Three’s theme was “Good eating, health, mind and body” Our group gave examples and comparisons on how those people who have lived a long time have achieved good health, the influence of the way you eat, move, and think can affect your wellbeing. The way a healthy diet looks and its influence on one’s wellbeing, as well as the relationship and balance between diet and exercise. The many paths one can take to create healthier habits and take care of one’s body and mind, just as tips to maintain good health. The different types of diets, how these can differ, what factors to take into account when deciding to follow a diet, and the benefits of each diet for each person. The relationship between our mental health and our nutrition, the way certain food can either improve or decay the chemistry in our brain and make us feel better or worse. The energy levels and alternatives to achieve and maintain the strength needed throughout the activities of the day. The eating disorders, their treatments, types, causes, and effects. I liked our group gave many indications and real-life examples of the topics explained in the presentation, and the way our group illustrated how some of the guidance and tips we provided would look if applied, in this sense showing it is not necessary to change all our habits and lifestyles at the same time and follow all-at-once all the advice we gave but how changing small things at first and incorporating healthier options can affect greatly.
In contrast with the first presentation, this second activity was a much more self-regulated one.
In this sense, we were not meant to explain and interpret to our classmates information from a book and look for the best way to convey information from a single source but we were expected to make a whole investigation and collect from different sources information to build a speech that could defend each of our themes and organize the information in such a way that we could both explain out topics and convince the class why each of these are important. Thus, during this second presentation, we had an opportunity to put into practice the information explained in the chapters assigned to each team and how they would look in reality the application of these.
During this second set of presentations, I could see more cohesive and united groups. Overall I think each group made a good contribution and made it very clear for the class to understand each of the themes that were explained. In the activity, each group had the opportunity to research and lead the theme that was assigned to them in their own way and explain/defend those topics that were more appealing to them.
The dynamics in my group also improved significantly, this time there was more participation and communication among the group members, as it was not the first time we worked together and the process of creating our presentation was more fluent. The unity of the group members was also better. For instance, when our leader could not make it to the presentation due to personal reasons, we could solve the situation and try to help each other as best we could get as a result the opportunity for all of the members to make the presentation and explain its topic.
